    A CLEARER FILE HANDOFF

Remove metadata before you share a file

Images, documents, audio and video can carry information that is not obvious from the visible content. A photo may include camera details, capture time, GPS coordinates, editing software or embedded comments. A PDF or Word document may keep an author name, revision history, producer field or document identifier. Audio and video containers can also include titles, locations, software names and other tags.

This remove metadata tool creates a cleaned copy of supported files in your browser. The output keeps the visible content and the media stream while removing recognized metadata structures for that format. The process is useful before publishing a client image, sending a document, uploading media to a community, or sharing a file with an AI service.

After cleaning, compare the new file with the original when the file is important. Check that the image still opens, document pages and text look right, and audio or video still plays. If a file contains a private tag, malformed structure or unsupported embedded object, the tool may leave it unchanged or report a failure instead of pretending that every hidden field was removed.

Use the result as a privacy step before a file leaves your device. Metadata can describe how a file was created even when the visible image, text, sound or video looks ordinary. A cleaned copy is helpful for a client handoff, public upload, support ticket or AI prompt, but it does not erase the content itself. Keep the original when you need an audit trail, and open the downloaded copy before sending it. If the file is sensitive or legally important, verify it with a separate metadata viewer and follow the rules of the platform receiving it.

    FIVE SIMPLE MOVES

    How to remove metadata

The tool is designed for a short, local workflow with a clear result.

    01

    Choose files

Select one file or add a small batch from your device. The file stays in this browser tab.

    02

    Check the queue

Review the file names, extensions and sizes. Unsupported formats and files over the limits are rejected before processing.

    03

    Start cleaning

The browser selects the format-specific parser for each file and removes recognized metadata structures.

    04

    Review status

Each item reports a success or failure state. A failure never becomes a fake downloadable result.

    05

    Download

Download one cleaned file directly or download several completed files together as a ZIP archive.

    FORMAT COVERAGE

    What this metadata remover handles

Different formats store metadata in different structures, so each family uses a format-specific cleaning path.

Format Cleaning method Preserves Important limit
JPG / JPEG Lossless segment removal for EXIF, XMP, IPTC and comments. Compressed image data, common color profiles and display markers. Only recognized JPEG segments are removed.
PNG / WebP Static images are raster re-encoded in the browser; recognized chunks are cleaned. Visible pixels and supported transparency. Animated PNG and animated WebP are rejected to avoid flattening frames.
GIF Lossless block-level removal of comments and non-rendering application data. Frames, palette, timing, transparency and looping. Unknown top-level blocks fail safely.
PDF / DOCX Remove standard document properties, XMP, identifiers and identity-bearing XML attributes. Visible pages, text and document content. Unrecognized private objects may remain.
MP4 / MOV / WebM / MKV Container-specific ISO-BMFF or Matroska parsing without transcoding. Audio and video tracks. Only supported container structures are modified.
MP3 / WAV / FLAC / AAC / M4A Remove recognized ID3, APE, comments, RIFF and container tag blocks. Audio frames and required stream structure. Some vendor-private tags may not be recognized.

    EXAMPLE

A cleaned copy, not a converted file

The tool keeps the original extension and focuses on removing recognized metadata. It does not transcode video or audio, and it does not alter the visible text of a document.

    READ BEFORE CLEANING

    Know the privacy boundary

Metadata removal reduces hidden file information, but it is not a promise of total anonymity.

    • The visible image, document text, audio, video and file name are not erased.
    • Unknown vendor-private metadata or malformed structures may remain.
    • PNG and WebP animations are rejected instead of being flattened.
    • AI labels, C2PA, SynthID and visible watermarks are not guaranteed to be removed.
    • No file-upload claim covers the cleaning code, not every network request made by a website, browser or advertising service.
    • Large files can use substantial browser memory, especially when a ZIP is generated.

    COMMON QUESTIONS

    Remove metadata FAQ

    Are my files uploaded?

The cleaning code processes selected files in your browser and does not upload their contents for cleaning. A website can still make ordinary requests for its HTML, CSS, JavaScript, analytics or ads, so this is not a promise of network anonymity.

    Can this remove all metadata?

No tool should make that blanket promise. This project removes recognized structures for each supported format and explains what is preserved and what may remain.

Can I remove metadata from a video?

Yes. Supported MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV files use container-specific cleaning without transcoding. The visible video and audio are preserved when the structure is supported.

Can I clean several files at once?

Yes. Add up to 10 files within the 500 MB queue limit. Completed files can be downloaded separately or packaged into a ZIP.

What happens to animated PNG or WebP files?

They are rejected because a simple Canvas re-encode could flatten animation into a single frame. GIF uses a separate lossless block-cleaning path.

Does metadata removal change the file?

The output is a new file. JPEG, GIF and container formats use structure-aware paths; static PNG/WebP and PDF/DOCX may be reserialized, so always review important files after cleaning.
